Claire von Glümer (born October 18, 1825 in Blankenburg , † May 20, 1906 in Blasewitz ) was a German writer and translator .

Life

Claire von Glümer was born in Blankenburg as the daughter of the lawyer Karl Weddo von Glümer and the writer Charlotte von Glümer . Her father was politically persecuted in his hometown as a supporter of liberal ideas in the 1830s , and so the entire family traveled through Germany, Switzerland and France for several years. It was not until her mother's death in 1841 that Claire von Glümers returned to Germany. At first she was accommodated in her grandfather's house and began working as an educator from 1846 to 1848. The father did not return to Germany until 1848, where he was employed as a reporter for a Prussian newspaper at the Frankfurt parliament. Claire von Glümer worked at his side for half a year as a parliamentary reporter for the Magdeburger Zeitung . After the imperial election in 1849 , she gave up this position.

On May 6, 1849, her brother Bodo von Glümer was arrested as a participant in the Dresden May uprising and sentenced to death. Only later was a pardon for life imprisonment. Claire von Glümer moved to Dresden in 1851 and planned his liberation with friends, but the plan was betrayed and she was sentenced to three months in prison at Hubertusburg Castle . After her release she was expelled from the state of Saxony. She went to Wolfenbüttel with her friend, the writer Auguste Scheibe , where she earned her living by writing. At the same time, she campaigned for her brother's pardon, which took place in 1859. In the same year Claire von Glümer was allowed to return to Dresden, where she lived with Auguste Scheibe for more than 30 years in Naumannstrasse 1 (today: Goetheallee 34). Claire von Glümer was in correspondence with numerous writers of her time. She had a long friendship with Julian Schmidt (1818–1886), the most famous literary critic of the time. She died in 1906 and was buried in the Johannisfriedhof .

In addition to travelogues, novellas and stories, Claire von Glümer also produced numerous translations; the most important works are George Sand's Story of My Life in Twelve Volumes and Ivan Turgenev's Fathers and Sons .
