Clares is a northern Spanish village with about 15 inhabitants, which administratively belongs to the municipality ( municipio ) Maranchón in the north of the province of Guadalajara in the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha in central Spain .

Clares is located on the southwest side of the Iberian Mountains at an altitude of approx. 1250 meters above sea level. d. The Río Tajuña has its source near the village .

Population development

In the first half of the 20th century the town still had around 200 inhabitants, but since then the number of inhabitants has decreased rapidly as a result of the mechanization of agriculture : the village currently only has about 15 inhabitants.

economy

Agriculture, especially cattle breeding (cattle, sheep, goats), traditionally plays the largest role in the economic life of the small village. Income from tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes ( casas rurales ) has increased over the last few decades. In addition, falling revenues from the leasing of land areas for in the 2000s by the Spanish energy giant Iberdrola SA erected wind turbines on.

history

Clares was independent until the middle of the 20th century. In 1969, the place joined the municipality of Maranchón.

Attractions

  • The church of the village ( Ntra Sra. De la Asunción ) is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . It comes from the 16./17. Century and has a small bell gable ( espandaña ) with the year 1693 carved into a stone. The church was probably built on the site of a previous building that was too small or dilapidated, because the interior still houses a Romanesque baptismal font . The altarpiece and several carved figures date from the 17th to 19th centuries.

  • There is a communal bakery ( horno ) and a wash house ( lavadero ) in the village .
  • The architecturally rather simple Ermita de San Roque stands about 400 meters outside the village.
  • A Celtiberian necropolis ( Necrópolis de Navafría ) was uncovered in the vicinity of the place as early as 1914 . Three pieces of jewelery were discovered in one of the graves and are now kept in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional in Madrid . The most beautiful piece is a diadem or a necklace with pearls etc. made of fired clay ( arcilla cocida ).
