Claude de La Chatre

Claude de la Châtre (* 1536 at La Maisonfort Castle in Genouilly ; † December 18, 1614 ) was Seigneur and Baron of La Maisonfort and Governor of Berry from 1569 to 1588 . He was one of the Catholic officers of the Huguenot Wars .

He came from an old noble family and was brought up as a page des Connétables de Montmorency . In 1569 he became governor of Berry, which he exchanged with Gilles de Souvré , marquis de Courtenvaux for the office of Bailli of Blois . In 1562 he fought in the Battle of Dreux , in 1570 in the Battle of Arnay-le-Duc , and in 1573 he took part in the siege and conquest of Sancerre . In 1578 he followed François-Hercule de Valois-Angoulême, duc d'Alençon into exile in the Netherlands .

As a supporter of the Guisen and since 1585 governor of Bourges , he joined the Holy League, which was revived after the death of the heir to the throne Alençon in 1584 . He refused to recognize Henry of Navarre as heir to the throne and usurped himself for the League of Berry. In 1588 he was - now the most important military in the league in the French province - by King Henry III. discontinued without this having had any effect on Claude de La Châtre.

Henry III. died in 1589, and it was not until 1594 before he submitted to Henry of Navarre as King Henry IV and surrendered the cities of Bourges and Orléans to him. In return, Henry IV made him Marshal of France on February 29, 1594 .

King Louis XIII appointed him lieutenant general of the army in 1610 and sent him to the siege of the Jülich fortress . Together with Field Marshal Moritz von Oranien, he forced the governor of Jülich Johann von Reuschenberg zu Overbach to surrender after just a few weeks .

In the year of his death, Louis XIII appointed he finally succeeded Henri I. de Montmorency as Connétable of France . He was buried in the Sainte-Chapelle in Bourges.
