She was a Senator of the Republic of Colombia and a vice-presidential candidate in the 2018 presidential election for the Alianza Verde party ("Green Alliance"). She was a consultant for the United Nations and has worked as a columnist for various media.

Life

She is the eldest daughter of Reyes Elias Lopez Ruizes and Maria del Carmen Hernandez with six other siblings. She went to a public primary school in Engativá and then attended the Colegio Policarpa Salavarrieta high school in Santa Fe . She holds degrees in finance , political science and international relations from the private Universidad Externado de Colombia , a master's degree in public administration and urban development from Columbia University , New York, and a PhD in political science from Northwestern University , Chicago .

On December 17, 2019, she married her friend Angélica Lozano .

Political career

She began her public appearance in the student movement Séptima papeleta , which promoted the Colombian National Constituent Assembly from 1989 to 1990.

She was secretary of the Acción Comunal of Bogotá and was responsible for Santa Fe during Enrique Peñalosa's first term as mayor .

She worked as a researcher for the organization Arcoiris and showed atypical votes during her election observations. This was the starting point for uncovering the parapolitics scandal in 2006. Their investigations have led to convictions of more than 40 public officials for links to parapolitics ; it continued to generate controversy because of its dissident opinions on the former president and now also on Senator Álvaro Uribe Vélez and his political allies.

In 2008, the Colombian Audit Office ruled that 2006 proceedings for alleged property damage were void after the Constitutional Court had ruled in their favor a year earlier for “violation of due process and the right to defense through improper notification”.

In October 2009 she was dismissed from the newspaper El Tiempo because she had criticized Agro Ingreso Seguro, AIS (“Secure Agro Income”) in a column . The AIS is a credit line from FINAGRO or the Colombian government to provide low-interest loans for the agricultural development of Colombian farmers, which was replaced by a new concept, Desarrollo Rural con Equidad (DRE), after the outbreak of a corruption scandal involving AIS . According to López, the newspaper is owned by the Colombian Santos family (former owners and current shareholders of the newspaper), who are said to have tried to promote the candidacy of former minister Juan Manuel Santos for the office of president. López also referred to the newspaper's interest in acquiring the country's third private television station. El Tiempo board of directors , Roberto Pombo, described the statements as "false, malicious and defamatory".

In 2011, a criminal case was decided in their favor after former Colombian President Ernesto Samper charged them with defamation and defamation, López had linked him to the Mafia in a column in El Tiempo .

On October 27, 2019, she was the first woman to be elected mayor of Bogotá with 35 percent of the vote .

López has made a name for herself in Colombia as an anti-corruption fighter. The center-left politician actually began her career as a journalist. Her new post as mayor of the capital Bogotá is considered the second most important political office in the country after the presidency. “We not only won, but we are also changing history,” writes the election winner on Twitter. Incidentally, she only just won the elections with 35 percent against the liberal politician Carlos Fernando Galán, who got around 32 percent.

Her term as mayor was shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic in Colombia . Her central measures during this time included the early simulation of preventive isolation, the conversion of the Corferias exhibition center in central Bogotá into a hospital and the closure of El Dorado Airport .

Controversy

In 2014, they were sued by a lawyer for annulment of their appointment as senator because they had a relationship with MP Angélica Lozano and two people who are de facto marital partners are prohibited by law from giving MPs from the same political party be. López argued that this prohibition did not affect her because she was in a relationship and not in a de facto marital union. The State Council rejected the lawsuit against Claudia López and her partner and upheld the inauguration of both.
