Claudio Martínez Mehner (* 1970 in Bremen ) is a Spanish pianist and piano teacher .

life and work

Claudio Martínez Mehner was born in 1970 as the son of a Spanish-German family in Bremen. As a teenager he studied at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Madrid with Amparo Fuster , Pedro Lerma and Joaquín Soriano . He worked as a violist in the Spanish youth orchestra and as a violinist, violist and harpsichordist in the orchestra of the German School in Madrid.

He continued his piano studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid with Dmitri Bashkirow . Later he deepened his piano studies at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg with Vitaly Margulis , at the Fondazione per il Pianoforte in Como (Italy) and at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore (USA) with Leon Fleisher . He attended master classes with Murray Perahia , Fou Ts'ong , Alexis Weissenberg , Karl-Ulrich Schnabel , Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau , Mstislav Rostropovich and György Kurtág, among others . He took lessons from Ferenc Rados periodically for several years .

At the age of 13 and 15, Claudio Martínez won first prize in the national youth music competition . In 1990 he won the Paloma O'Shea international piano competition in Santander . A few years later he won first prizes at the international piano competitions Pilar Bayona in Saragossa (1992), the Fondation Chimay in Belgium (1993) and Dino Ciani in Milan (1993).

Claudio Martínez has appeared as a soloist in Europe, the United States, Russia and Japan with renowned orchestras such as the Munich Philharmonic , the Moscow Philharmonic, the Filarmonica del Teatro Alla Scala , the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra of the North German Radio. Claudio Martínez Mehner also emerged as an enthusiastic chamber musician. He gave piano and violin evenings with his sister Vera Martínez Mehner . With the Cuarteto Casals he recorded the piano quintet in F minor, Op. 34 by Johannes Brahms on sound carrier.

Claudio Martínez worked as a piano teacher for a long time as assistant to Dmitri Bashkirow at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. He later worked as a professor of piano at the Conservatorio Superior de Salamanca and at the Conservatorio Superior de Aragón in Saragossa. Claudio Martínez currently teaches at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and the Basel University of Music .
