Claus Rainer Bartram (born August 2, 1952 in Hamburg ) is a German human geneticist and molecular biologist at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

Life

Bartram studied philosophy and medicine at the University of Hamburg from 1972 . In 1978 he completed his studies in medicine with the state exam and received his doctorate "with distinction" with the work Cytogenetic studies on human chromosomes after labeling with 5-bromodeoxyuridine to Dr. med. Between 1979 and 1985 he completed his specialist training as a pediatrician (pediatrician) at the University Clinic in Düsseldorf and at the University Clinic in Ulm , interrupted by a research stay at the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics ( Dirk Bootsma ) at the Erasmus University Rotterdam funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) . 1985 habilitation Bartram with the work molecular genetic characterization of leukemia of man in specialized pediatrics.

1987 Bartram was appointed professor of molecular biology at the University of Ulm , in 1993 he received a call to the local Department of Clinical Molecular Biology. In the same year he obtained the title of specialist in human genetics . From 1995 to 2019 he was director of the Institute for Human Genetics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He turned down an offer in 1999 at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Bartram is married. He has three children.

Act

Bartram is primarily concerned with tumor genetics , in particular with the molecular genetic characterization of leukemia and the hereditary tendency to cancer . He works in an interdisciplinary and translational way between basic research and bedside treatment. Bartram also focuses on ethical questions in human genetics , especially prenatal and predictive genetic diagnostics .

Between 2001 and 2004 Bartram was vice dean of the medical faculty in Heidelberg, between 2004 and 2014 dean. Between 2002 and 2006 he was chairman of the German Society for Human Genetics (GfH).

In 1997, Bartram was involved in the uncovering of the counterfeit scandal involving the Ulm cancer researchers Friedhelm Herrmann and Marion Brach.
