Claus Michael Ringel (born February 10, 1945 in Zwickau ) is a German mathematician who studies algebra .

Claus Michael Ringel, Oberwolfach 2005

From 1964 Ringel studied mathematics, physics and philosophy at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main with a diploma in mathematics in 1968. He received his doctorate in 1969 under Friedrich-Wilhelm Bauer in Frankfurt ( diagonalization pairs in homological algebra ). He was then a research assistant at the University of Tübingen and in 1971/72 assistant professor at Carleton University (where he worked with Vlastimil Dlab ). In 1972 he completed his habilitation in Tübingen and became a university lecturer there . In 1974 he became a scientific adviser and professor at the University of Bonn . From 1978 until his retirement in 2010 he was a professor at Bielefeld University . From 2010 to 2013 he was visiting professor at Jiaotong University in Shanghai , since 2000 he was visiting professor at the Chinese University of Science and Technology in Hefei and he also taught at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah .

Ringel deals with representation theory of algebras. From 1991 to 2000 he headed the project representation theory of algebras and from 1995 to 2000 the structure of quantum groups in the Collaborative Research Center 343 Discrete Structures in Mathematics and he headed the project Topological and Spectral Structures in Representation Theory in the Collaborative Research Center 701 Spectral Structures and Topological Methods in Mathematics . He published over 140 scientific papers (2005) and was classified as a Highly Cited Researcher at the ISI in 2004.

Ringel is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society . He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians 1983 in Warsaw ( Indecomposable representations of finite dimensional algebras ).

He is a member of the Royal Norwegian Academy of Sciences and an honorary doctorate from the Technical and Natural Sciences University of Norway in Trondheim .

In 2005/06 he was chairman of the mathematics review board at the DFG .
