Cleveland is a city in Liberty County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in the northwest corner of the county, in the southeast of Texas, is in the south about 100 km from the Gulf of Mexico , in the east about 120 km from Louisiana and has a total area of 12.5 km² without significant water surface.
history
In 1854, Father Peter La Cour built a church near today's town, around which a small settlement was formed. In 1878 a small town had formed and Charles Lander Cleveland donated land to maintain a train station for the Houston East & West Texas Railway (now the Southern Pacific Railroad ). The place was then named after him.

According to the 2000 census, 7,605 people in 2,645 households and 1,758 families lived here. The population density was 610.5 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 58.65% White, 27.13% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 11.58% other ethnic groups. About 1.72% were of mixed race and 20.51% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,645 households, 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 42.4% of these were married couples living together. 19.0% were single mothers and 33.5% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were single households and there were people living in 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.27.
27.4% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.7% 18 to 24, 29.6% 25 to 44, 18.3% 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 101.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 101.7 men.
The median income for a household in the 24,164 USD , and the median income for a family 28,527 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,385 versus $ 17,889 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,562. 22.4% of the population and 19.3% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 31.8% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 16.1% were 65 or older.
