action
Wyburd, a hit man who specializes in removing tattoos , has kidnapped his next victim from a diner in a remote forest hut. The young man's skin is disfigured by numerous scars in the form of characters. Wyburd makes him an offer: if the boy tells him his story and if it touches him, he would let death come quickly. The young man gets involved and tells his story:
Mary Florescu, professor of parapsychology and author, and her partner Reg Fuller investigate an alleged haunted house in Edinburgh in which a young girl was horribly killed. During their research they come across Simon McNeal, who poses as a medium and fortune teller . The three of them examine the house and strange phenomena actually seem to show up: Fonts appear, the technical equipment goes crazy and Mary is plagued by nightmares. Scars are showing on Simon's body. Erotic tension crackles between Mary and Simon and the two sleep together. Then a ghost apparently takes possession of Mary and she sees a well, which she used as an access to the spirit world in her childhood.
Mary and Simon smell a bestseller, but a call from the laboratory destroys Mary's dream: Simon had only acted out everything and with the help of gunpowder , sulfur and other aids created the ghostly apparitions. However, Simon asserts that the last apparition was real and tries to prove it. He goes back to his bedroom. Suddenly the technology that has been unleashed begins to go crazy. Dragonflies buzz around Mary and even the skeptical technician panics. As they both run up to Simon, ghosts come towards them. Reg is startled and falls down the stairs. He dies instantly. Mary sees Simon on whom a whole stream of ghosts is trying to immortalize their stories. Mary makes a deal with the ghosts. Every night the spirits write their story on Simon and Mary translates the characters for her books. At some point, Simon manages to escape.
Wyburd is not very satisfied with the story, but quickly kills Simon. He packs his skin in a suitcase. When he wakes up after a nap, the whole room is covered in blood and continues to fill up from Wyburd's suitcase. The dead continue to write. Wyburd is drowning in blood. Mary enters the remote forest hut and takes the skin back.

Reviews
The previous reviews have been very restrained. Most critics criticize the lack of tension and the predictable story. The atmosphere and ambience of the film were mostly emphasized.
“At some point you notice in the film that the tickling idea that the dead carve their stories into the skin of a living person started out and then a story was knitted around it. Unfortunately, this did not result in a neatly progressing plot. In addition, at some point you don't know whether it's Simon's or Mary's story that is being told. "
