history

Palais Coburg with Braunbastei

In the Middle Ages, the suburb in front of the Ferdinand Stubentor bordered the moat of the Vienna city wall at the site of today's Coburg Bastion . After the renovation in the 16th century, the Brown Bastion was built here . 1843–1847, Duke Ferdinand von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha had the Palais Coburg built on the city-side entrance of the Braunbastei. When the Viennese city wall and its bastions were torn down, part of the Brown Bastion with the palace was left standing. Below this, a new street was built, which was named Coburgbastei. But there has never been a bastion of this name.

Location and characteristics

The Coburgbastei runs parallel to the Ringstrasse from Liebenberggasse in a south-westerly direction to Weihburggasse, but following the course of the remains of the Braunbastei is not straight, but rather curved. The right-hand side of the street in the direction of the city is taken up by the wall of the Braunbastei, on which the Palais Coburg can be seen from afar, elevated and further back than the course of the street. The left side of the street, on the other hand, is dominated by large modern hotel buildings.

The horticultural building was erected here in 1863 by August Weber for the Austrian Horticultural Society. Since the unobstructed view of the Palais Coburg behind it had to be guaranteed from the Ringstrasse, the horticultural building was only a one-story building in the neo-renaissance style . Originally intended for exhibition purposes, the rooms and halls of the building were used for social events, balls and dance events. For example, B. Carl Michael Ziehrer here in the flower rooms for many years. The noble character of such events was lost over the decades. In 1913, large parts of the building were demolished and only the central wing with the flower rooms remained. In 1919 shops and the horticultural cinema were set up.

Although the building was not damaged in World War II, it was demolished in 1959. This and the planned new construction of a twenty-story high-rise led to heated public debates. Finally, however, was 1958-1961, designed by Erich Boltenstern and Kurt Schlauss the Hotel Am Parkring built with thirteen floors. It is a reinforced concrete frame structure that is clad with stone slabs. The new Gartenbaukino was also built as the first large-scale cinema in Vienna based on plans by Robert Kotas. This premiere cinema is the location of the Viennale .

The hotel is located between Parkring, Liebenberggasse, Coburgbastei and Gartenbaupromenade and has the main address Parkring 12.

After the old horticultural building was demolished, the area remained undeveloped for many years and served as a car sales point. 1983–1985 Harry Glück built the Marriott Hotel as a free-standing building block on this site with Werner Höfer, Tadeusz Spychała and Peter Czernin . It is a post-modern building with a stone-aluminum facade and bay windows. The middle part is raised by round arches.

The hotel is located between Parkring, Gartenbaupromenade, Coburgbastei and Weihburggasse. The back of the building is at the Coburgbastei, while the main address is Parkring 12a.

The important late Classicist palace was built by Adolf Korompay from 1840–1845 according to plans by Karl Schleps . It was built on the former Braunbastei with access from the city side and a garden on the bastion's casemates . The widely visible pillars of the building gave the palace the popular name Asparagus Castle . In the course of the demolition of the Vienna city wall, large parts of the Braunbastei were torn down, a retaining wall was erected, the Coburg bastion was laid out in front of this and the horticultural building was built, which should not be higher than 17 meters in order to guarantee the unobstructed view of the city park from the palace . At the same time, Franz von Neumann the Elder added the coronation of the attic to the palace. In 2000–2003 the building was thoroughly restored and is currently used as a hotel with offices and restaurants. There is still an unobstructed view of the Palais Coburg from the Ringstrasse. The beautiful rooms inside deserve special attention, such as the late classical ballroom on the first floor. The remains of the Braunbastei are also important.

The building is located at the main address Seilerstätte 1–3 and is a listed building .
