Genre : Cochlostoma
Subgenus : Cochlostoma
Type : Cochlostoma nouleti
Scientific name
Cochlostoma nouleti
( Dupuy , 1851)

Cochlostoma nouleti is a species of snail from the family of the forest cap snail (Cochlostomatidae) in the order Architaenioglossa ("old bandworm")that lives on land.

features

The right-hand wound case is 8 to 12 mm high and 4.0 to 5.3 mm wide. It has 7.0 to 8.5 only slightly arched, steadily increasing turns; the sideline is almost straight. Only the last passage is slightly flattened at the base. The first whorls can be slightly angled under the periphery; the edges can be hidden by the seam or very close to the seam. The first half of an embryonic turn has only weak folds that merge into tightly spaced ribs (20 to 25 per millimeter) up to the second turn. Then 3 to 4 larger ribs per millimeter alternate with 0 to 3 weaker ribs in between. The edge of the mouth is turned over and somewhat reinforced. This not very wide, collar-like edge is colored white. The navel is tight. The housing is horn-colored to dark gray-brown and often has irregular, dark, axially running flame-like spots. There are also two darker spiral bands in the umbilical region of the case.

The soft body of the animal is colored gray. A white ring sits near the base of the tentacles. The sole is also usually white. The male has a characteristic, wavy, key-shaped penis with one flattened side and a bulge on it.

Similar species

Cochlostoma nouleti superficially resembles some heavily ribbed morphs of Cochlostoma crassilabrum . However, C. nouleti differs from this species by the alternating ribs of varying strength and the flame-like color pattern. The outer lip is less calcified, but has a ring-like thickened zone. The greatest similarities exist with a fossil species, Cochlostoma lugdunense (Delafond & Depéret, 1893) from the Pliocene of Burgundy . This species also shows the alternating ribs, the ring-like thickened zone of the outer lip and the flame-like color pattern. In the fossil species, however, the thickened ring-like zone of the outer lip is more pronounced and the species is significantly smaller. The height / width index is also more variable.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species is restricted to the French Pyrenees and their northern foothills (départements Haute Garonne , Ariege . Pyrénées-Orientales and Aude ). It occurs there from about 400 to 1600 m above sea level. The animals live between and on rocks in scree slopes, mostly in river valleys.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1851 by Dominique Dupuy as Pomatias Nouleti . Wilhelm Kobelt assigned the species to Cochlostoma (Obscurella) as early as 1902 , a position in the system that the Europaea fauna also follows.
