The music for Lee Unkrich's animated film Coco - More Alive Than Life! was composed by Michael Giacchino , who won an Oscar for his work on the Disney-Pixar film Above . Giacchino said: “When I was Coco - More Alive than Life! saw a mosaic of feelings overcame me. I had to think about my family and my relationships with relatives in Italy. This film speaks to everyone. ”For the orchestration, Giacchino worked with Germaine Franco , who was responsible for the soundtrack for the 2015 film Dope . About working with her, Giacchino said: “She shed so much light on the complex richness of Mexican music. The collaboration between all the musicians on this film was a great experience. ”Franco said about the work:“ We wanted to combine our music with elements of Mexican music in order to create a unique balance in sound, harmony and rhythm. ”Franco continued Use of a variety of typical Mexican instruments, such as a guitarrón , a folk harp , a quijada and several sousaphones , charchetas , jaranas , requintos , marimbas , trumpets and violins . The recording was made in August 2017 together with an 83-piece orchestra.

Traditional Mexican songs can be found in the score. Camilo Lara from the Mexican Institute of Sound music project supported the team as musical advisor and contributed the piece Jálale . Together with Franco, together with cultural advisors Benjamín Juárez Echenque and Marcela Davison Avilés, he was asked to create the sound world of Miguel's world, the main character in the film. Lara joined the music team early on, helping the filmmakers navigate various moments in the film through the spectrum of Mexican music, from cumbia to mariachi music. Lara said: “From day one, the idea should be as authentic as possible. We heard a lot of music, from demanding to street music. I think we have succeeded in presenting a wonderful mosaic of the great diversity of our music. ”For this, Lara continues, a large number of top Mexican musicians from various genres have been included, such as Banda, Marimba, Mariachi and Son Jarocho.

The several versions of the film-heard song Remember Me was created by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez wrote that already in 2013 for her work on the song Let It Go for the Disney film The Ice Queen - Completely unabashed at the Oscars in 2014 won an Oscar were. The song, the title of which in the German version is Denk immer an mich and deals with the central theme of memory in the film, is considered to be Ernesto de la Cruz's greatest hit, but was in fact composed by his colleague Hector, who claims to be the real great-great-grandfather of Miguel turns out. At the end of the film, Miguel sings the song for his great-grandmother Coco, who joins the song that her father once wrote for her. In the end-credits version, the song is sung by Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade . Miguel said, “The song is special because it's about family and it reminds us not to forget where we come from. It is a reminder that we must cherish the love and sacrifice of our ancestors, as it led to our being able to be who we are. I think the message of this song is strong enough to connect with everyone, but we add another layer of depth and soul to the emotion of the song in this version. ”Depending on the tempo, the lyrics of Remember Me can be interpreted differently , as a love song, but also as a lullaby, as actually intended in the film.

In the song La Llorona , Llorona , a figure of Latin American folklore, is sung about, more precisely the spirit of a woman who weeps for her children, whom she drowned in a river. The song El Mundo es mi Familia (in the German version Die Welt ist meine Familia ), sung in Spanish in the original film, is not included on the soundtrack, but on the soundtrack with 17 songs sung in Spanish ( Coco - Banda Sonora Original en Español ).

Movie

On the Día de los Muertos in Mexico, friends and relatives come together to commemorate the loved ones who have passed away

The film is about the twelve-year-old Miguel, who lives in a Mexican village and dreams of becoming a great musician, although music has been banned in his family for generations. Like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz, he wants to prove his talent. He got the opportunity to do so when, after a mysterious chain of events on the Día de los Muertos, he suddenly found himself in the land of the dead, where he met the cheerful crook Hector. Together they embark on an extraordinary journey, on which Miguel also takes part in a musical talent competition in the realm of the dead. Ultimately, the truth behind Miguel's family story comes to light, he experiences a family reunion of a different kind and ultimately becomes a mariachi himself .

The Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that is mainly celebrated in the center and south of the country. On this day, friends and relatives come together to commemorate the loved ones who have passed away. Their favorite foods, sugar skulls and flowers are offered on altars and their spiritual journey is supported by prayers.

According to director Lee Unkrich, the Día de los Muertos is very much about our obligation to keep the memory of the deceased alive, which also means to pass this on to the next generation.
