The Codex Palatinus germanicus 1 is an early modern manuscript from the former Bibliotheca Palatina in Heidelberg . The Codex belongs to the Codices Palatini germanici , the German-language manuscripts of the Palatina, which have been kept in the Heidelberg University Library since 1816 ; The signature of the Heidelberg University Library and the common scientific name is Cod. Pal. germ. 1 (short form: Cpg 1 ).

The codex contains on the one hand tracts and advice texts on astrology , for example on the meaning of the signs of the zodiac or the influence of the planets on humans, on the other hand astrological and medical texts, e.g. B. Bloodletting rules and remarks on the sanitatis regime , rules for maintaining health.

The collective manuscript was created in Heidelberg around 1538.

The Codex is a paper manuscript with 52 leaves; the foliation of the 17th century only counts the described sheets 1–45.

The sheet size of the codex is 31 × 22.7 cm, with a writing space of 22–24 × 14–15 cm with 29 to 34 lines per page. Continuous writing is a current font from the 16th century, some headings are in chancellery script . All sheets are written by one hand. Slips of paper are attached to the double pages 4ar / 4av and 6ar / 6av. Pages 1r – 42v are a copy of pages 1r – 51v from Cod. Pal. germ. 718 . The same scribe wrote pages 1r – 56r of the medical composite manuscript Cod. Pal. germ. 241 made.

With the codex, three text fragments from earlier fold strips have survived; An old Kopert is also preserved as an attachment to the manuscript : a document dated December 6, 1538. Its content states that Johann Horbusch von Melsungen, Preceptor of the Antoniterhaus in Alzey, granted all rights to the subjects and serfs belonging to his house to the Count Palatine Ludwig V. transferred.

The cardboard binding and the parchment spine of the manuscript were added in 1970.

The contents of this manuscript are messages from the lay doctor Regina Hurleweg , as indicated by the handwritten note from Ludwig V - hurlenwegin above on sheet 1ar (older count: sheet I; additionally as hurlewegin on the Kopert). Hurleweg probably lived in the Electoral Palatinate in the early 16th century ; Ludwig V included their medical and astrological considerations several times in his own medical compilations .

The writing language of the Codex is South Rhine-Franconian with Bavarian forms.

Like the other manuscripts of the Electoral Palatinate Libraries, the Codex came into the possession of the Vatican Library in Rome after the conquest of the Electoral Palatinate in the Thirty Years War in 1622 and was only brought to Heidelberg in 1816 with the other German-language holdings of the Palatina as part of the regulations during the Congress of Vienna returned.

Content

Cod. Pal. germ. 1 contains typical examples of “prognostic small literature”, as they have often been included in such collective manuscripts since the 14th century .

On the first pages of the manuscript (sheets 1r – 3v) there is a planetary tract with “ Planet Children” texts, followed by twelve month rules (sheets 3v – 8r), the latter mixed with explanations on the signs of the zodiac and specific health rules for the twelve months.

Two texts on bloodletting rules follow (sheets 8r – 9v and 10r – 12v); in the second text with a list of "discarded days" (sheet 10v), exactly dated days of the year (January 1, February 23, March 1 and 28, April 10 and 20, May 3 and 25, June 16, July 15 and 22, August 1 and 30, September 13, 21 and 29, November 16 and 27, December 5), on which bloodletting should be waived because otherwise disaster threatens. Two short texts are inserted on sheet 12r: Bloodletting rules according to Petrus Hispanus (around 1205–1277, Pope Johannes XXI.) And blood show rules from the Rule of Health (Chapters 81–83) according to Konrad von Eichstätt (before 1300–1342). On sheets 12v – 17r there are further parts of the rule of health , for example about the right amount and way to eat, about the benefits of sleep, or about the harm of anger and the benefits of happiness. This is followed by further bloodletting rules according to Petrus Hispanus (sheets 17r – 18r).

This is followed by four pages with astrological texts: weather rules according to the status of the planets (sheet 18r, 18v), an explanation of the properties and forces of the planets (sheet 18v) with an astronomical table that shows when the planets appear ( planet table , Sheet 19v). In between, on sheet 19r of the manuscript there is a further explanation of the characteristics of the signs of the zodiac as well as two prognoses for Paul’s Day (January 25) and Saint Vincent’s Day (January 22).

The longest coherent text in the Codex is Order and Health (sheets 20r – 40v), a German adaptation of the original Latin regime of Konrad von Eichstätt.

At the end of the manuscript there is a collection of recipes: recipes for ointments (sheets 40v – 42v), for plasters (sheets 42v – 44r) and for burnt water (sheets 44r – 45r).

The original folding strips enclosed with the codex are parts of parchment leaves cut across . There are three text fragments from a breviary from the 14th century, which are described in Textura by one hand.
