Cod. Pal. germ. 6, sheet 26r: About constellation children
Cod. Pal. germ. 6, sheet 92r: 7 planets

The Codex is a paper manuscript with 98 leaves. Sheet 2 is glued together from two sheets and has a rotatable disc calendar (Rota) on sheet 2r . The foliation of the 17th century counts the sheets 1–94, the empty sheets in front and behind have received modern counting. In the upper right corners of some of the leaves there are remains of an original foliation that goes back to the table of contents (leaves 3v – 4r).

The sheet size of the codex is 28 × 19 cm, with a writing space of 18.5 × 10 cm described with 23 to 28 lines per page. Continuous writing is a cursive script , written by a hand, the headlines are partly in clerical script executed in red and violet color. In many cases there is room for miniatures and initials , which were not executed.

The Roman parchment binding dates from the 17th century.

origin

On the title page of the first part of the manuscript, the author's name Johansen Harrtung Doctor is given for the translation of De Mansionibus from Latin. Presumably the writer read out the actual name of the translator, Johannes Hartlieb , from his original as Johannes Hartung (1505–1579), a Heidelberg scientist from Miltenberg . Hartung was enrolled at Heidelberg University in 1521; from 1537 on he was professor of Greek there until he moved to the Freiburg University in 1546.

The manuscript belonged to the holdings of the older castle library, where it was recorded during cataloging in 1556/59.

The writing language is Bavarian.

Like the other manuscripts of the Electoral Palatinate Libraries, the Codex came into the possession of the Vatican Library in Rome after the conquest of the Electoral Palatinate in the Thirty Years War in 1622 and was only brought to Heidelberg in 1816 with the other German-language holdings of the Palatina as part of the regulations during the Congress of Vienna returned.

Content

The first written pages of the manuscript (sheets 1r – 25v) reproduce Johannes Hartlieb's German translation of the De Mansionibus lunar prophecy diary (German: About the stations of the moon ). The title page with the name of the author is followed by a circular calendarius on sheet 2r : discs that can be rotated against each other ( rota ) with the days of the week and the planets, which can be assigned to each of them, as well as simultaneously assigned characters ( Guet , Boese , Mittel ). On sheet 2v there are instructions on how to calculate the lunar stations that supposedly influence the life of the questioner. Sheet 3r shows an onomatomantic (called mantic ) table with the numerical values of the letters, followed by the table of contents of the script (sheets 3v-4r). The text has been preserved in six manuscripts (with this copy Cpg 5 ).

This is followed by About Constellation Children, a text on natal astrology , taking constellations into account (sheets 26r – 44v) and a short teaching on temperament (sheets 45r – 48v). The four temperaments are arranged as follows: 1. Phlegmatic, 2. Melancholic, 3. Choleric, 4. Sanguine.

The most extensive text, About Children of the Zodiac Signs , is another treatise on birth astrology, here with the help of signs of the zodiac (sheets 49r – 91v). The following text (sheets 92r – 94r) briefly introduces the meaning of the seven “planets” and assigns them sciences according to the astrological approach of the early modern era : Saturn / geometry, Jupiter / logic, Mars / arithmetic, sun / grammar , Venus / music, Mercury / physics and moon / astronomy.
