Cody is a place in Park County in the US state Wyoming and also the seat of the county. The city was founded by William Frederick Cody , known as Buffalo Bill, in 1896 and named after him. Cody is the birthplace of Jackson Pollock , a famous American painter.

geography

The place Cody is at an altitude of 1500 m above sea level. NN (5016 feet) on the Shoshone River and covers an area of ​​24.9 km² (9.5 mi²). The Shoshone River crosses the city and is created by the confluence of a north and south arm, about 5 km west of Cody in the Buffalo Bill Reservoir (a reservoir dammed by the Buffalo Bill Dam ).

In the north of Cody is the Heart Mountain , a 2400 m high mountain, in the south are the Carten Mountains with 3400 m altitude.

Cody is 80 km east of Yellowstone National Park . A road over one of the bridges over the river in Cody leads directly to the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park.

To the west of the village, on the river, is an area with now almost extinct volcanism . In the 19th century it was after the first whites in the region, the trapper John Colter as Colter's Hell referred. Washington Irving first mentions it in his book on the fur trader Benjamin Bonneville . Due to a mix-up, the name Colter's Hell was later transferred to the Yellowstone area just under 100 km to the west .
