Hermann Bahr: Caph (1894)

The Fischer Collection is the name of an inexpensive series of books with high-quality furnishings from S. Fischer Verlag in Berlin, which had a specially made cover image for each volume. From 1894 onwards the volumes appeared in loose succession with two-color printing, numbered from 1897 to 1899 with a four-color cover design in probably nine volumes, including the first editions by Thomas Mann and Peter Altenberg . The series was based on similar undertakings in the French book market, such as the Ollendorf Collection and the Guillaume Collection . With their sales price of 2 marks, the thread-sewn books without hardcover were very cheap, aimed at the mass market and represented forerunners of the paperbacks . However, they were not successful and the series was soon discontinued. It was not until the 1970s that the S. Fischer Verlag “revived” the series.
