Colleen McCullough

Colleen McCullough AO (born June 1, 1937 in Wellington , New South Wales , † January 29, 2015 in Burnt Pine , Norfolk Island ) was a best-selling Australian author whose best-known work is The Thorn Birds .

Life

McCullough was born in Wellington, New South Wales in 1937 to James and Laurie McCullough. Her mother was a New Zealander with ancestors from the Māori people . She became a neurologist and worked in various hospitals in Australia and England. She later researched and taught in the United States, where she lived between 1963 and 1976. She was a lecturer in the medical school at Yale University . She had lived on Norfolk Island since the late 1970s .

In 2006, McCullough was honored with the title of Officer of the Order of Australia for her contribution to writing to the arts and the general public by supporting national and international educational programs, medical-scientific and charitable organizations and causes. The Macquarie University honored her in 1993 with a Doctor of Letters .

McCullough was a member of the New York Academy of Sciences , a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a staunch monarchist.
