The film distribution company Columbus Film AG was founded in Zurich in 1934 and is one of the oldest still active film distribution companies in Switzerland.

history

Until 1955 Columbus Film was the Swiss licensee of the Hollywood studio Columbia Pictures . In 1966 the first films from the CSSR were distributed, followed by films from Hungary, Poland and the Soviet Union. A stock of English and American film classics was built in the 1970s and 80s and continues to be maintained.

When the company was taken over by the Swiss film producers Peter Baumann , Marcel Hoehn and Alfi Sinniger in 1990, Columbus Film became one of the most important distributors of Swiss films - including the feature films Reise der Hoffnung (1990) by Xavier Koller , Anna Göldin - Last Witch (1991) by Gertrud Pinkus , Vollmond (1998) by Fredi M. In 2006 there was a generation change. The new managing directors Andrea Bleuler and Selina Willemse have expanded the program focus to include European and non-European studio films.

In 2012 the company was taken over by Frenetic Films .

Since 1991, Columbus Film AG has released around 20 Swiss films on VHS and DVD under the Swiss Film Collection label .
