action

The young Anna Göldin starts with Dr. Tschudi got a job as a maid. The doctor has a big house, a wife and three children. Anna conscientiously devotes herself to her tasks in the house, garden and raising children. She lives in a room in the attic and is available to the Tschudi family around the clock. It doesn't take long and her employer becomes intrusive, but Anna refuses. In the village he had found out that Anna had previously "laid hands on her own womb". For this she was pilloried and whipped for a day. She was serving with the Zwicky family in Mollis in 1773 when the young Mr Melchior took a liking to Anna. He harbored honest feelings and even wanted to marry Anna, but his mother's arrogance prevented him. So they sent the pregnant Anna away so that there would be no talk in town.

The Tschudis' eldest daughter likes Anna and is jealous when she spends time with the other siblings. One day the younger daughter finds pins in her milk. Anna is accused of putting her in it. As a result, she is given notice and has to leave the house after eleven months. Disappointed, Anna moves to Werdenberg with a friend who is certain that Anna will soon be employed again. That is how long she should be at hand, because she has a lot to do at the moment. But in the meantime, Dr. Tschudi charges against Anna, because his younger daughter is very ill, which he blames on the swallowed pins and thus on Anna.

Some people in the village are convinced that Tschudi impregnated his maid and that he therefore absolutely wants to get rid of her. When Melchior Zwicky learns that his Anna is about to be brought to justice and is wanted by the authorities, he sends a messenger to her to warn her. She flees from Werdenberg and hides under a false name in a neighboring town.

In the meantime, 100 Kronen Thaler are being used to capture Anna Göldin, which ultimately leads to her being found and brought back to Glarus . There she is put in chains and is supposed to be tortured if she does not restore Tschudi's daughter to health and takes back the curse that overtaken the child. In her need she agrees to help the child if she can. Anne-Miggeli is so delighted to see Anne again that she almost gets well just from that. In addition, Anna tries to promote the condition of the child with massages , which also works. But now she is accused of witchcraft all the more.

Dr. Tschudi's wife is now expecting her fourth child and fears that the witch will revenge her. Therefore Anna should be taken out of the country. But the council decided to sentence Anna to death by the sword straight away. The execution took place on June 13, 1782.

background

The film is based on the true events of the last execution of a witch in Switzerland, which aroused protests and outrage across Europe and is now considered a judicial murder . The content of the film largely corresponds to the novel by Eveline Hasler .

The figure of the writer Kubli serves as a connecting element in the film. The Landschreiber is an authentic figure who, by quoting the trial files, connects the real events of the time with artistic freedom in the cinematic implementation.

criticism

The lexicon of international films wrote about the film: “The story of the last woman murdered as a witch in Europe as a visually powerful, detailed and equally exciting and atmospheric painting of morals, which - without simple accusations - includes the social environment, but overall not beyond the traditional framework History display goes beyond.
