The Combo Colossale was a band from the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) from Hanover , whose first LP was released in 1983. The band became popular during the time of the NDW with the song “Puppen don't cry”. Their co-founder and front man was the singer Michael Flexig , who gained some notoriety after the end of her active time as a rock singer .

history

The forerunner of the group Combo Colossale was the band Murphy , founded in 1975 . This played Anglo-American mainstream rock and performed at small festivals or school parties. Murphy was already working with German texts in the 1970s . This is one of the reasons why the group felt more committed to German rock , which was not very popular at the time . After the "discovery" by the later producer Hermann Hausmann, the group initially (therefore) released a single "In the Morning of my Life" on Jupiter Records in 1981 under the pseudonym Mike Telly Band with the typical sound of 70s disco music . A third place at the Young Talent Festival of the German Phono Academy in Würzburg ensured the publication of three original compositions on the WDR sampler "Rock-Studio" ( EMI Group ) under the band name Murphy in 1982 .

At that time, Hausmann offered the band a demo. The title was written by Hans Blum (better known as Henry Valentino). It was the original version of the later NDW classic "Puppen don't cry", which was edited jointly by frontman Michael Flexig , keyboardist Rainer Przywara and guitarist Detlev Jachzek . A contract with Repertoire Records followed . However, a new band name had to be found, as Murphy no longer suited the music. The Colossale combo was born.

1982 was the first big TV appearance of the group from Hanover, in addition to Hubert KaH and his “starry sky”, the Combo Colossale presented their title “Puppen don't cry” in the TV program “Der ZDF -Showexpress” by Michael Schanze . This title was immediately released as a single and hit the German single charts. The Combo Colossale toured across Germany and in 1983 released the album "Combo Colossale".

But the Combo Colossale was also hit hard by the demise of the NDW. The second single, "Julia", didn't sell nearly as well any more and public interest in the group decreased significantly. The 1983 single “Inside they dance samba”, which can still be found on some NDW samplers, was still a success. The last single they shared was "Eis und Feuer - My-Oh-My", a German cover version of the Slade classic "My-Oh-My". Then there were problems within the band. Flexig moved to EMI Group and left Germany to work with the hard rock band Zeno . The rest of the band tried their last single "König für eine Nacht" (sung by Rainer Przywara), but could not match the success of the first album. The Combo Colossale project ended in 1985.

In 2002 the five Hanoverians met again and played a few gigs on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the band. Some new titles were created and were presented at the few concerts together with the old hits. The group released a maxi CD “Schröder or Stoiber” in 2002 under the pseudonym Herbert singt .

In 2008 front man Flexig sang a few new tracks with the project "NDW Goes INDUSTRIAL" by the Erfurt group Seven Seals . This resulted in the album "Deutsche Welle 2.0", which was released on March 9, 2012 on Timezone Records. It contains, among other things, the NDW classic “Puppen do not cry”, which Flexig has recorded in a new version, as well as other hits by other well-known interpreters of the NDW era, such as B. Miss Menke , Ixi and Hubert Kah .

In April 2015 Michael Flexig released a new album on the Yellow Snake Records label as “Michael Flexig presenta Combo Colossale e Amici”. It contains the complete band discography of the early 1980s and four new songs, some of which were written with the help of Geier- Sturzflug front man Friedel Geratsch . The album is called "Porto Allegro".
