Come Out and Play is the fourth studio album by the American hard rock band Twisted Sister , released in 1985 . It contains contributions from numerous guest musicians , including Billy Joel, Don Dokken, Clarence Clemons, Brian Setzer and Alice Cooper, as well as the cover version of the Shangri-Las hit Leader of the Pack . The title of the album quotes a line of text from the American film The Warriors , which is repeated as the intro of the first song, albeit slightly changed.

Emergence

In 1984 Twisted Sister had their first successes in the internationally important music markets with the album Stay Hungry : The album reached number 15 on the Billboard 200 , number 34 in Great Britain and number 48 in Germany. The singles I Wanna Rock and We're Not Gonna Take It ran on heavy rotation on MTV . The album went gold and platinum in the year of release and received double platinum in 1985; it has had triple platinum status since 1995.

In 1985 the follow-up album Come Out and Play was recorded, directed by the German producer Dieter Dierks , who also attracted international attention through his success with Accept ( Metal Heart ) and the Scorpions ( Love at First Sting , World Wide Live ) . A small part of the recordings took place in New York, but most of the work was done in the Record Plant Studio in Los Angeles , which meant that the New York studio was not mentioned by name in the production notes of the booklet (“ Recorded somewhere in New York and at the 'old' Record Plant in Los Angeles, RIP ”).

The title song of the album, which is also the first song on the album, opens with a quote from the 1979 film The Warriors : You can hear bottles clashing and the voice of Dee Snider, who repeatedly asks the band to come out to play (“ Come out and play, Twisted Sister ”). In the film, it is the gang leader Luther who hits bottles and with the words "Warriors, come out and play" challenges the warriors' hostile gang to fight.

For the album, the group also recorded a version of the song Leader of the Pack , which was rewritten for this purpose because the original title tells the story from the point of view of the woman who fell in love with the leader of a gang and does not live that love may. After changing the text, the song describes the same situation from the point of view of the gang boss.

The band went to great lengths with the title Be Chrool to Your Scuel , on which numerous guest musicians can be heard. The song is in the style of classic rock 'n' roll , the authentic sound was provided by Stray Cats singer and guitarist Brian Setzer and Billy Joel (piano), the saxophone solo was played by Clarence Clemons . Dee Snider and Alice Cooper shared the vocals . The video shot for this song was rejected by MTV because it seemed "too offensive". In terms of content, the song criticizes outdated school systems that offer little challenge and do not prepare students for life (“there has to be a better way to teach because it doesn't work as it should”; “Hey, I need to know what I need if it continues from here ”).

Other guest musicians were Gary Holland and Dokken singer Don Dokken, who contributed the high harmony chants for I Believe in You . Keyboards used on the album were played by Alan St. John.

Cover
The album cover showed a
manhole cover embedded in an asphalt surface , under which a hand with red painted fingernails was wedged on the left and right. Above and below the cover, the words "Twisted Sister" and "Come Out and Play" were sprayed onto the asphalt with pink paint. The Twisted Sister logo was visible on the manhole cover. The first edition of the album contained a gimmick : the manhole cover on the cover could be opened, whereupon Dee Snider seemed to emerge from the channel and supported himself on the edge of the manhole.

The Acknowledgments noted: “Additional publicity from the Amarillo Police Department, Amarillo, TX; Parents Music Resource Center; Tipper Gore; Susan Baker; Senator Paula 'Whose side am I on?' Hawkins ". The PMRC and the aforementioned members of that body had put We're Not Gonna Take It from the Twisted Sister album Stay Hungry on their "List of the 15 Most Objectionable Songs".

Come Out And Play was released on November 9, 1985, the first single was Leader of the Pack , followed by King of the Fools and Be Chrool to Your Scuel .

Come Out and Play was not particularly successful: The album was only able to reach number 53 in the US charts and disappeared from the listings after 17 weeks, in Great Britain it only reached number 95, in Germany the album had no effect in the Hit lists. The same applied to the singles: Leader of the Pack reached 53rd place in the USA and 47th place in Great Britain, but disappeared again after a short time; King of the Fools and Be Chrool to Your Scuel were not recorded at all. The album was awarded a gold record. The moderate success of the album ushered in the demise of the band, who had to forego the services of drummer AJ Pero for the next album, Love Is for Suckers , who had thrown in the towel after a badly run US tour that was accompanied by many concert cancellations .

Reviewer Stephen Greg Prato wrote for allmusic.com that the tracks on the album were partly "ambitious (the title track), obviously recorded for the radio (a cover of Leader of the Pack, Be Chrool to Your Scuel) and recorded directly for headbangers ( 'The Fire Still Burns,' 'Kill or Be Killed'). "

Metal Hammer wrote that the album was “an ambivalent work.” Anyone who “prefersthe rough, unpolished HM sound of older TS days from the days of You Can't Stop Rock'n'Roll will be disappointed, because the new LP lies' pretty much in line with its predecessor Stay Hungry ' . Only everything seems 'more professional and perfectly styled,' the guitars are 'fuller and wider mixed'. Songs like the hit song You Want What We Got , the TS-typical title track and the funny rock'n'roller Be Chrool To Your Scuel would have 'what it takes to develop into real south curve classics'. "
