action

Norval Greenwood lives with his mother in a mansion in Beverly Hills, California. His father left the family when Norval was a young child. One day, when he received a letter from his father asking him to come and see him and directions, Norval set off by bus to Oregon. When he arrives at the beach house, his father doesn't seem to recognize him right away, but he still happily welcomes him. While Norval tried to get closer to his father over the next few days, the latter was becoming more and more aggressive, repellent and insulting towards him. After Norval brags about being a big animal in the music business and a close friend of Elton John, his father sees through the bluff and exposes him. On another occasion, Norval is swimming alone in the sea when suddenly a large stone lands in the water close to his head. When he looks at the beach, Norval sees his father standing there. At night he hears strange noises from the ventilation shaft and overhears his father talking to someone and complaining that he is not a babysitter. Finally one afternoon the two of them escalate, during which the father gets a meat cleaver and threatens to kill Norval. In the subsequent scuffle, however, he suffers a heart attack and falls dead.

Since the local undertaker has no other option to house the body, Norval has to keep it in a body bag in the house after embalming. While he waits for his mother to pick him up for the next few days, he hears increasingly loud noises that seem to come from below the house. He finds old objects from his childhood hidden behind a wall, including a photo album. The photos contained therein also show his father, and Norval realizes that the dead man wasn't his father at all. He sets out to find the source of the noises and discovers a steel door in the floor that leads down to a bunker. There he meets his father Brian, bloodied, chained and obviously abused. Before he can free him, they both hear a voice in the house. Brian asks Norval to hide and ambush Jethro because he wants to torture Brian. The attempt fails, however, and Jethro escapes, with the announcement that he will return with an old friend.

Norval helps Brian out of the bunker. He reveals to him that after he left the family, he went to Bangkok, where he and three other men - Jethro, Gordon (the man in the body bag) and Dandy - kidnapped the daughter of the richest man in Thailand for a Asking for ransom. The ransom was paid, but Brian cheated on the other three of the money and has been on the run ever since. With the money he financed, among other things, the luxurious life of Norval and his mother in Beverly Hills, which Norval did not know until then. When Norval tries to leave the house with Brian, they run into Dandy. This attacks Norval, but is ultimately brutally killed by him. After they leave the house, Norval discovers that his suitcase is still in the house and that the address of him and his mother is on it. In fact, Jethro finds the luggage tag and threatens to go to California and kill the mother.

Norval hides in Jethro's trunk to await an opportunity to kill him and thus save his mother. Arriving at a motel, Norval stabs Jethros' tire with a thorn, which is used to impale receipts, and then finds him in one of the rooms with a prostitute. Norval is overwhelmed by it, and Jethro stabs him several times in the stomach and face with the thorn. Norval survives and pursues Jethro, who cannot get very far in his car after causing an accident due to the broken tires and a serious open head injury. Jethro tells Norval that his mother is a prostitute and that not only Brian but he himself had sex with her. Then Norval pulls the thorn from his face and stabs Jethro through the open wound in the head.

Seriously wounded, Norval goes back to his father, whom he finds weak on the beach. He lies down next to him and confesses to him that he never let his mother get over Brian and that she ruined every chance she had of finding new happiness. He had always hoped that Brian would come back and live as a happy family again. With the last of his strength, Brian puts his hand on Norvals, who then closes his eyes.

production

The lake house in Oregon, where Norvals father lives, a building was near the Canadian coastal town of Tofino as a backdrop

In Come to Daddy is the directorial debut of New Zealander Ant Timpson . Toby Harvard wrote the script for the black humor thriller comedy . The film was produced by Mette-Marie Kongsved , Laura Tunstall , Daniel Bekerman , Katie Holly and Emma Slade .

Elijah Wood plays Norval, whose father left him and mother when he was a toddler. When he receives a letter from his father urging him to come to him immediately, the man he meets in the remote beach house is very different from what Norval imagined his father would be.

The shooting took place in Canada in the summer of 2018. Among other things, the film was shot there in the small coastal town of Tofino on Vancouver Island on the west coast of the province of British Columbia . The lake house where Norval's father lives in Oregon was set in a building on the Esowista Peninsula near Tofino, which was built in 1955. When choosing this location, Timpson said he was looking for a house that appears to have been built at the end of the world to convey that Norval is venturing into the complete unknown and taking him as far away from civilization as possible.

The film music was composed by Karl Steven . The soundtrack album with a total of seven pieces of music was released by the Death Waltz Recording Company as a download on February 7, 2020.

From the end of April to the beginning of May 2019, the film was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival as part of the Midnight section and celebrated its world premiere here. In July 2019, it was screened at the Fantasia Film Festival and the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival . In August 2019 a screening took place at the Melbourne International Film Festival. In September 2019 it was shown at the Fantasy Filmfest in several major German cities. The film opened in Canadian cinemas on February 21, 2020.

Director Ant Timpson at the premiere for the film at the Tribeca Film Festival

Patrick Cavanaugh of comicbook.com writes that the greatest strength of Come to Daddy is how often the audience is surprised and the film refuses to be pigeonholed . From scene to scene, the film changes from a family drama to a comedy film and a gripping thriller to an emotional tragedy. What begins with the painful memories of the loss of a family member ultimately shows Come to Daddy the bloody madness that accompanies the search for approval from those who have left you behind.

Eric Kohn of Indiewire writes, with shades of early films by Peter Jackson and The Evil Dead II by Sam Raimi chaos in itself build Come to Daddy always continue on. Despite the many curious twists and turns, director Ant Timpson creates a bloody, but also hilarious father-son reunion saga with his wild debut film, which also maintains a sentimental story. While Come to Daddy presents itself as a thriller full of intrigue at the beginning, the finale tries to convey in poignant images an idea that even cruel people still have the potential for empathy and family ties can overcome even the bloodiest of circumstances. So the cruel events stand in a strange way as an ideal metaphor for working through family histories.
