Conan Exiles is a survival computer game by Funcom for Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and is set in the world of Conan the Cimmerians . After the early access version of the game was released in 2017, the full version for the three platforms was released in May 2018.
Gameplay
General and game world
In the game, the player must survive in the desert-like Exiled Lands full of barbarians by asserting himself against other players ( player versus player ) and non-player characters ( player versus environment ) and satisfying his needs. A crafting system allows the player to dismantle and collect objects in order to then create individual weapons, tools, armor, dishes, components and other objects. Before that, the player can assign his character's race, appearance and other properties in a character editor. Religion plays an important role in the game and the player can believe in one of the six gods Crom, Set, Yog, Mitra, Derketo or Ymir. The player collects experience points through progress and increases in his level when he has collected enough of them, which he then unlocks more functions. Talent points can be used to buy manufacturing recipes for weapons, armor, handicrafts, decorations and components, and attribute points can be used to improve character values such as strength, agility, regeneration or stamina. There are several dungeons on the map in which bosses can be defeated. Furthermore, it is possible for the player to keep his own slaves and to assign tasks to them. The map size is 53 km 2 .
Mods and multiplayer mode
Mods can be installed through the Steam Workshop. You can create your own mods with the Custom Unreal Engine Editor. The developers have also published a special development kit .
Both single-player and multiplayer modes can be played . This can be either through the local network , the official servers done by Funcom or unofficial servers of the community. The Funcom servers were discontinued at the beginning of February 2017 because the developers were not satisfied with the host PingPerfect. A few days later they announced that they would use GameServer.com as their host.

Early Access
The game was first announced in January 2016. Back in 2008, the developers published the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Age of Conan , which is also set in the Conan universe. The release in Steam's Early Access program was originally announced for September 13, 2016, but was postponed to January 31, 2017. In August 2017, the free expansion The Frozen North was released , which, among other things, enlarged the game world by 70% and add a snow landscape.
Full version and updates
Koch Media has been selling the store version of the game since the beginning of 2018 . The game was originally supposed to be released in the 1st quarter of 2018, but this was postponed to May 8, 2018. On June 28, 2018, the first paid DLC was released , which expanded the game with items from the Chinese-style Khitai empire . Innovations appear in regular updates. To counter exploits in the game, players will receive up to $ 500 per exploit found.
Sales figures
In the first week of Early Access, the game sold over 320,000 times. The game had sold over 480,000 times in the first 28 days. The game had sold over a million times in May 2018 and over 1.5 million times in July.
Further editions
In addition to the standard version, a special edition was also released, which includes a t-shirt , digital comic books, an art book , the e-book The Coming of Conan, the soundtrack of Age of Conan and a digital pen & paper - Contains role-playing game for Conan as well as in-game objects for Age of Conan. There is also a Collectors Edition for the final version of the game, which contains a world map instead of the e-book and does not use in-game items.

The game is compared with role-playing games such as Skyrim and Dark Souls and survival games such as Rust and ARK: Survival Evolved . The combat system is described as brutal due to the severing of body parts and a lot of blood, which also fits the Conan universe.
The introduction of penis sliders, with which the size of the character's penis can be set in the character editor, sparked discussions and attention on the Internet. The developers justified the decision with the fact that it fits into the barbarian setting and that they also have a slider for the female bust. On the Xbox One, however, the function had to be removed due to Microsoft's decision .
The game was rated rather negatively on Steam. The main criticism was originally the performance, which is reflected, for example, in the frame rate , the server stability and connection problems, the artificial intelligence and the general susceptibility to errors in the game. The unbalanced level system and a lack of long-term motivation due to too little content were also criticized , as previously announced game elements such as mounts or magic were ultimately not implemented. Another point of criticism is the region-based server allocation of the players. In addition, the only sketchy reference to the world of Conan is criticized as well as the sparse assistance.
Among other things, the game world and atmosphere with its hidden plot branches, the sound and the music, the dynamic combat system, the construction options and the freedom for server operators and modders are praised.
