Condalia is a genus from the family of the Buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae). It includes around 20 species in North and South America. The generic name honors Antonio Condal (1745–1804), a Spanish doctor and botanist.

description

The Condalia species are evergreen shrubs or small trees. Their shoot structure shows a pronounced differentiation into long and short shoots . The short shoots end in a strong thorn. Short shoots sit on them, which make up the majority of the leaf mass. The leaf position is alternate, but the short shoots can appear to be clustered.

The flowers stand individually or in clusters ( fascicles ) in the axils of the short shoot leaves. The flower cup , which remains at the base of the fruit until the fruit is ripe, is cup-shaped. The discus that has grown together with the flower cup is thin. The petals are usually absent or - if present - about as long as the sepals . The upper ovary consists of two carpels and is twofold. The fruits are stone fruits with one or two stone pits.
