Conrad Georg Kuppler (born May 10, 1790 in Nuremberg ; † September 25, 1842 there ; also written "Konrad Georg Kuppler") was a mechanical engineer and professor .

life and work

Kuppler was the son of organ and instrument maker Johann Georg Kuppler (1760–1840). As an autodidact , Kuppler had acquired such good scientific and technical knowledge that in 1823 he was appointed professor at the newly founded "Polytechnic School" in Nuremberg, the current Georg Simon Ohm University of Nuremberg , for the subject " Descriptive Geometry " . During this time he made a name for himself as an accomplished and universal practitioner. So between 1823 and 1824 he restarted the “ Männleinlauf ”, a famous late medieval astronomical clock that is one of the moon clocks with a moon ball . Because of his familiarity with the export-oriented craft industry typical of Nuremberg, in 1826, on behalf of the city of Nuremberg and the local "Society for the Promotion of the Fatherland Industry", Kuppler went on an extensive spy trip to the technologically very advanced industrial regions of Austria and Prussia.

The chain bridge in Nuremberg designed by Kuppler

Kuppler became known as the designer of the chain bridge built in Nuremberg in 1824 , which still exists today and is the oldest preserved chain bridge on the European continent. He orientated himself on English bridges, which he knew from technical magazines. Through his teaching activities, but also as editor and editor of important specialist literature, he was very successful in training future engineers and technicians. He prepared important preliminary studies for the Ludwigseisenbahn , the first German steam-powered railway between Nuremberg and Fürth , which opened in 1835 .
