Conrad Schember

Conrad Schember (born September 24, 1811 in Helsa , Hesse; † February 1, 1891 in Vienna ) was a German- Austrian industrialist and founder of the balance manufacturer C. Schember & Sons .

biography

Schember came from a pastor's family . He learned the metalworking trade and emigrated to Vienna, where he first worked as a machine worker in the first Austrian weighbridge factory from Rollé and Schwilgué . From 1836 he worked in the workshops of the Kaiser-Ferdinand-Nordbahn , which soon sent him to John Cockerill's machine factory in Seraing to train in locomotive construction . In 1845 he went to the railway workshops in Pardubitz as a foreman or supervisor , then to Böhmisch-Trübau and finally to Prague. In 1850 he was accepted into the state service.

Schember signed a contract with the weighbridge manufacturer Louis Simon. In 1852 he finally set up his own small workshop for the production of weighbridges in Vienna's 2nd district. The small workshop laid the foundation for the weighbridge and machine factory C. Schember & Sons founded in 1872 , which became very successful. The company finally moved to Atzgersdorf .

Conrad Schember participated in exhibitions as early as the 1860s and was awarded the crown by Emperor Franz Joseph I in view of his achievements at the Paris World Exhibition in 1867 by awarding him the golden Cross of Merit .

In recognition of his industrial activity Conrad Schember was built by Emperor Franz Joseph I. by awarding the Knight's Cross of the Franz-Joseph-Order excellent.

In 1883 Schember left his company, his sons Carl August (1838–1917), Ludwig (1839–1886) and Albert (1845–1911) succeeded him.
