Convair X-12
The Convair X-12 , also called Atlas B , was the second, further developed test environment for the Atlas program . In contrast to its predecessor, the Convair X-11 , which had only one engine, it was equipped with three engines. It was propelled by a multi-stage rocket running on liquid fuel. The first flight took place in July 1958.
The X-12 was the first aircraft with a 1.5-stage rocket engine, which later became a trademark of the Atlas program. After the Soviet R-7, it was the first US missile whose range of 10,179 km could be described as intercontinental .
