Lockheed Martin X-44

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lockheed Martin X-44 are two different flight projects that, apart from the manufacturer, have nothing to do with each other.

The X-44 "MANTA" ( M Ultimatum A xis N o T ail A ircraft / multi-axis tail batch aircraft) should try to build a fully maneuverable in all axes plane that without the possibility of height and vertical tail gets along. Changes in direction should only be carried out by pure 3D thrust vector control . The aircraft was to be developed from the F-22 by extending the wings and removing the tail unit. The project sponsored by NASA and the US Air Force was directed but never got beyond the design phase and was discontinued in 2000.

The X-44A , on the other hand, is an unmanned technology demonstrator for the development of a UCAV . The 9 m wide drone with modular wings completed some test flights in 2001. The Lockheed Martin X-44A, the existence of which was only announced in 2018, was a competition design to the Boeing X-45 and Northrop Grumman X-47 and is technically between the RQ-3 Dark Star and P-175 Polecat .
