The Kratos XQ-58A Valkyrie is an experimental unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from the US manufacturer Kratos Defense and Security Solutions .

Concept of the Loyal Wingman

The Valkyrie is designed as a long-range jet-propelled UAV that can operate in the high subsonic range. The task of the UAV is to fly alongside a manned fighter aircraft and thereby navigate autonomously. This concept is known as Loyal Wingman in English and envisages the use of small drones to accompany manned fighters in action. Above all, they should attract enemy attacks and take on reconnaissance tasks. The US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) began working with Kratos even before the US Department of Defense had given its final approval to this concept .

The concept is being developed as part of the AFRL's Low-Cost Attritable Aircraft Technology Program (LCAAT). The unit cost for the Valkyrie is estimated at $ 2 to 3 million. Five flights in two phases are planned for the test.
