Corey Robert Flynn (born January 5, 1981 in Invercargill , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand rugby union player in the position of hooker .
youth
Flynn attended Southland Boys' High School in Invercargill, his birthplace. There he also joined the rugby club Star RC. In his youth he also played in the U-16 national team (1997), in the national school selection (1998), in the U-19 national team (2000) and in the U-21 national team (2001-2002) of New Zealand .
Provincial rugby
In 2001 he made his debut for the Southland Rugby national team in the New Zealand rugby championship . In the following season he was the captain of the team.
In 2003 Flynn moved from Southland to Canterbury RFU . With Canterbury he won the New Zealand Championship in 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 and the Ranfurly Shield in 2004 (14 successful defenses), 2007 (one successful defense), 2009 (four successful defenses) and 2010 (two successful defenses) . Due to national team commitments or injuries, he was rarely or rarely used in some seasons.
Great rugby
He has also been playing for the Crusaders in international super rugby since 2002 . With them he won the title as a substitute in his first season , as the Crusaders won all thirteen games. In 2003 and 2004 they failed only in the final against the Blues and the Australian Brumbies . After his competitor Mark Hammett's career ended in 2003, Flynn established himself as a regular broker with Canterbury and the Crusaders. In 2005, 2006 and 2008 further titles were won with the Crusaders. In 2007, 2009 and 2010 they failed again in the semi-finals and in 2011 in the final of the championship against the Australian Reds .
Flynn's seasons in super rugby were also overshadowed by injuries, as in the New Zealand championship. So far, he's broken his arm five times in his career.
National team
Despite a previous armbreak and his role as a substitute for the Crusaders, he was surprisingly called up as the third Hakler in the squad of the New Zealand national team (All Blacks) for the Rugby Union World Cup in Australia in 2003, although he has not yet played in an international match . At the World Cup, he made his debut for the All Blacks in the victorious group game against the Canadian national team when he was substituted on. A week later he played in the also victorious group game against the Tongan national team from the start, and scored his first international attempt . But he did not get to work any more. In the end, the All Blacks were eliminated in the semi-finals against the Australian national team (Wallabies), and won third place against the French national team .
Since then he has only played very irregularly in the national team and only comes off the bench when he does play because, unlike Canterbury and the Crusaders, he was never able to establish himself there. In 2008 he won the Grand Slam with the All Blacks on the November tour in Europe . With New Zealand he also won the Tri Nations in 2010 and successfully defended the Bledisloe Cup against Australia in 2010 and 2011 with the All Blacks .
His greatest success in rugby so far was winning the 2011 Rugby Union World Cup in his own country. At the tournament, however, he came only once as a substitute in the victorious opening game against Tonga.
Outside of the regular national team, he played again and again for the national team of the New Zealand Māori and since 2005 also for the Junior All Blacks . So he won with the New Zealand Māori in 2005 their game against the British and Irish Lions, who are touring New Zealand, 19:13.
