New York's ex-mayor Ed Koch said at the tenth anniversary in 1987 that the Cornelia Street Cafe had become a “culinary as well as cultural landmark” of the city.

The café belonged to the founder Robin Hirsch, who ran it together with Judith Kallas and Bob Siegler. It was open seven days a week and hosted about a hundred cultural events a year.
