Coryphantha ottonis is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet ottonis honors the German gardener and botanist Christoph Friedrich Otto .
description
Coryphantha ottonis grows individually with spherical, glossy dark green or gray-green shoots that reach heights of up to 12 centimeters with diameters of 4 to 7 centimeters. The soft, up to 15 millimeters long warts are conical in shape. The axillae are densely covered with wool and have nectar glands . The one to four gray, yellowish or reddish, stiff central spines are usually hooked in young plants and straight in older plants. They are 1.5 to 2 inches long. The eight to ten yellow to reddish radial spines have lengths of up to 1.2 centimeters.
The white, light yellow, rose or bright pink flowers are 3 to 6 inches long and reach 4 to 6.5 inches in diameter.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Coryphantha ottonis is widespread on pastureland in the Mexican states of Durango , Zacatecas , Guanajuato , Hidalgo , Jalisco , México , Puebla , Tlaxcala, and Querétaro .
The first description as Mammillaria ottonis by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer was published in 1838. Charles Lemaire placed the species in the genus Coryphantha in 1868 .
A nomenclature synonym is Cactus ottonis (Pfeiff.) Kuntze (1891, nom. Illeg. ICBN -Article 53.1). Other synonyms are Mammillaria asterias Cels ex Salm-Dyck (1850), Coryphantha asterias (Cels ex Salm-Dyck) Boed. ex A. Berger (1929), Echinocactus ottonianus Poselg. (1853), Coryphantha ottonianus (Poselg.) Y.Itô (1981, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Mammillaria bussleri Mundt (1902), Coryphantha bussleri (Mundt) Scheinvar (1981) and Mammillaria golziana Haage (1909).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
