Cossmann Werner

Cossmann Werner ( December 17, 1854 in Rogasen - June 22, 1918 in Munich ), was a German rabbi in Danzig and Munich.

Cossmann Werner, son of the Talmudist and Hebraist Philipp Werner, grew up in Posen, where he attended elementary school, the yeshiva and the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium . From 1872 to 1876 he studied at the University of Breslau and in 1877 he received his doctorate from the University of Leipzig with a dissertation on aspects of the pre-Christian history of Judea . After briefly studying at the rabbinical seminary in Breslau , the Jewish community of Old Scotland near Danzig elected him rabbi on May 19, 1878 . and to the conductor of the religious school. In the course of the 1880s Werner succeeded in uniting the five existing Jewish communities in Gdansk and its immediate vicinity, Altschottland, Weinberg, Langfuhr, Danzig-Breitgasse and Danzig-Mattenbuden into one synagogue community. On September 15, 1887, the Great Synagogue on Reitbahnstraße was inaugurated by Cossmann Werner.

In 1894 the Munich Jewish Community elected him to succeed Joseph Perles as their new community rabbi . In addition to his duties as a rabbi, he was also the chairman of the Bavarian Rabbinical Conference. He was also an advisor to the Bavarian government on Jewish affairs and a co-founder of the rabbis association in Germany. From 1894 to 1918 he was a religion teacher at the Wilhelmsgymnasium and the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich.

In 1906 he donated his valuable library to the Jewish community, which made it accessible to the public as the Cossmann-Werner Library . In 1917 he was awarded the title of professor. Cossmann Werner died in Munich in 1918 and was buried in the New Israelite Cemetery . He was considered to be one of the most prominent speakers of Judaism in Germany at the turn of the 20th century.
