County Championship 2016

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2016 County Championship was the 117th season of the national first-class cricket competition in England and Wales . It was held in two divisions, Division 1 and Division 2. Division 1 was through Middlesex , which thus reached their eleventh county championship. Relegated from Division 1 were Durham and Nottinghamshire , who were replaced in the subsequent 2017 season by the top-ranked Division 2 team, Essex .

format

The 18 First Class Counties were divided into two divisions according to the results of the 2015 season . In each division, each team plays one home and one away game against each other. A team receives 16 points for a win and 8 points for a tie (both teams achieve the same number of runs). If no result is achieved and the game ends in a draw, both teams get 5 points. There is also the possibility to collect bonus points in the first 110 overs of the first inning . Up to 5 points are awarded for runs and up to 3 points for wickets. Furthermore, it is possible that teams are deducted points if, for example, they play too slowly or the pitch is not properly prepared. At the end of the season the winner of Division 1 is County Champion, the last two placed in this division are relegated and, as Division 1 is reduced to eight teams, the top placed in Division 2 on.

Results

The season ended with a final day of play in which three teams played for the title and three teams for relegation. After Nottinghamshire was relegated before the final day of the match, Warwickshire beat Lancashire with 237 runs . This meant that Hampshire had to score 10 wickets against Durham on the final day . However, they only scored four and eventually lost with six wickets. In the battle for the championship, Middlesex was ahead of Yorkshire and Somerset before the final day of the match . Middlesex ended up playing against Yorkshire at their home stadium, Lord's Cricket Ground . Somerset managed to win their game against Nottinghamshire on the third day and gained so many bonus points that Yorkshire had to score 350 runs in the first innings to get their chances for the title. They did this with the last wicket. This meant that the winner of the game in London would win the championship, and Somerset would get their first title in a draw. After 85 overs in Middlesex's second innings , the two captains agreed to do a declared bowling by giving Yorkshire easy runs to Middlesex, which would make an early declaration. Middlesex scored 112 runs in 8 overs and Yorkshire set a target of 240 runs in 40 overs. In the end it was Toby Roland-Jones who decided the game for Middlesex and thus the championship with a hat trick 4.4 over before the end.

After the season was over, Durham received a financial aid package from the ECB . This was linked to a forced relegation from the first division, so that the actually relegated Hampshire remained in the first division.
