County Championship 2017

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2017 County Championship was the 118th season of the national first-class cricket competition in England and Wales and was held from April 7th to September 28th, 2017. It was held in two divisions, Division 1 and Division 2. For the first time, eight teams in Division 1 and ten teams in Division 2, with each team only playing 14 games. Division 1 was through Essex , thus reaching their seventh county championship. Relegated from Division 1 were Middlesex and Warwickshire , which were replaced in the subsequent 2018 season by the top-ranked Division 2 teams Worcestershire and Nottinghamshire .

format

The 18 First Class Counties were divided into two divisions based on the results of the 2016 season . In each division, each team plays one home and one away game against each other, whereas in division two the second legs are played against only six opponents. A team receives 16 points for a win and 8 points for a tie (both teams achieve the same number of runs). If no result is achieved and the game ends in a draw, both teams get 5 points. There is also the possibility to collect bonus points in the first 110 overs of the first inning . Up to 5 points are awarded for runs and up to 3 points for wickets. Furthermore, it is possible that teams are deducted points if, for example, they play too slowly or the pitch is not properly prepared. At the end of the season, the winner of Division 1 is County Champion, the last two placed in this division are relegated and the top two placed in Division 2 are promoted.

prehistory

After the previous season was over, Durham received a financial aid package from the ECB . This was linked to a forced relegation from the first division, so that the actually relegated Hampshire remained in the first division. It was also decided to hold a round under floodlights for the first time.
