Couto de Esteves is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Sever do Vouga . It has 890 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Finds prove a prehistoric settlement. The present location was first officially documented in 1067 , in a deed of ownership from the Mosteiro de Lorvão monastery . The place received its first city rights in 1128 by D.Teresa and her son D.Afonso Henriques , who later became the first king of Portugal. Since then it has been the seat of its own circle, which was listed in the royal register as Concelho Destevem in 1527 .

In 1836 the district was dissolved and Sever do Vouga was incorporated. The status of the small town ( Vila ) has not been revoked from Couto de Esteves to this day.
