Gordon Cowperthwaite

Gordon H. Cowperthwaite († 1998 ) was a Canadian public accountant .

Life

Cowperthwaite studied at McGill University (Bachelor of Science), the University of Alberta (MBA) and Michigan State University (Ph.D.). He began his work as a chartered accountant in 1943 with Peat Marwick Mitchell (KPM) in London. During World War II he was a lieutenant in the British Army . In 1954 he moved to Toronto . From 1970 to 1980 he was a partner at KPM. From 1980 to 1982 he was chairman of the company. From 1977 to 1980 he was Chairman of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants . In 1978 he received an honorary doctorate from McGill University. Cowperthwaite was President of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) from 1980 to 1982 . In 1989 he received the ICAO Award of Outstanding Merit. In 1994 the Gordon H. Cowperthwaite Center (GHC Center) for Accounting Education was established at the University of Waterloo , where he was Professor of Accounting.
