Craig Barrett (athlete)

Craig Michael Barrett (born November 16, 1971 in Opunake ) is a former New Zealand walker whose special route was the 50 km distance .

At the World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in 1995 he came in 22nd, at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta in 33rd and at the 1997 World Championships in Athens in 13th.

In 1998 he led the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur with a five-minute lead until shortly before the end, but collapsed dehydrated one kilometer from the finish . He tried to get up three times, unsuccessfully, and was eventually taken out of the race and given medical attention. The tragic end of the competition touched his compatriots so much that they voted him one of three participants in the games who received a new car in a telephone vote.

A seventh place at the 1999 World Cup in Seville was followed by an 18th place at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. In 2001 he gave up at the World Cup in Edmonton .

He celebrated his greatest success the following year when he won silver at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. In 2003 he was disqualified at the World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis , and in 2004 he finished 29th at the Olympic Games in Athens . At the 2005 World Cup in Helsinki he was disqualified again, at the 2006 Commonwealth Games he was fourth.

At the end of 2006 he ended his sporting career to complete his architecture degree.

Eight times he was New Zealand champion in 3000 and 5000 m walking (1998-2005), four times in 10 km walking (2001, 2003-2005), eight times in 20 km walking (1998-2004, 2006), four times in 30 km walking ( 1993, 1995–1997) and walking 50 km seven times (1995–1997, 1999, 2001–2003). In 1998 he was also the Australian 30 km champion.
