Craigellachie is a small settlement in the Clutha District of the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The settlement is located approximately 12 km northwest of Lawrence of the Clutha River and approximately 4 km southeast of Beaumont . The New Zealand State Highway 8 , which connects Milton and Roxburgh , runs through the settlement .

history

After a 434 m long railway tunnel through Big Hill between Bowlers Creek and Craigellachie was completed in 1914 , the Roxburgh Branch reached on December 15, 1914 via Craigellachie to Beaumont . The line ensured a connection of the settlement to the South Island Main Trunk Railway , the main railway line of the South Island. However, on June 1, 1968, the entire line was shut down and subsequently dismantled.

Attractions

In the settlement is the Craigellachie Down Rockery Gardens , a park with rock gardens and lots of flowering plants and trees from overseas. The facility can be visited from mid-September to the end of April.
