The Cranton Bay is a bay south of the Canisteo Peninsula at the eastern end of the Amundsen Sea . The southern end of the bay is formed by the Backer Islands and an ice shelf that separates this bay from Pine Island Bay . The Brownson Islands are immediately in front of their entrance .
It was mapped using aerial photographs of Operation Highjump (1946–1947) in December 1946. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it after Lieutenant Elmer Mitchell Cranton (* 1934), medical officer and head of the Byrd station in 1967.
