Cardinal Cristoforo Vidman

Cristoforo Widmann or Vidman (* 1617 in Venice , † the 30th September 1660 in Viterbo ) was an Italian Catholic Cardinal with German ancestry.

Early years

His family originally came from Germany. Cristoforo was born in Venice in 1617, the son of Giovanni, Count von Ortenburg . He received his training in Venice and received his doctorate in utroque iure , both in canon law and civil law .

His family was considered Venetian nobility, having acquired titles and offices from the city of Venice, which was anxious to raise money to finance their role in the Thirty Years War .

Church career

During the reign of Pope Urban VIII , Widmann became a cleric of the Apostolic Chamber and later its auditor . He had acquired both offices in an effort to settle in Rome.

According to his contemporary, John Bargrave , it was a tradition for new popes to transfer persons to leading spiritual positions by making them cardinal. After the election of Pope Innocent X in the conclave of 1644 , Widmann was removed from his offices so that the new pope could sell them to budding young clergymen. Widmann was elevated to cardinal pro illa vice by Pope Innocent X in the consistory of October 7, 1647 and appointed cardinal deacon in the church of Santi Nereo e Achilleo .

Despite being promoted to cardinal, he and his brother, now a count, still enjoyed "games, feasting, comedies and the company of women".

In 1651 he was appointed legate of Urbino and took part in the 1655 conclave that elected Pope Alexander VII . In 1658 he became a cardinal priest of the titular church of San Marco .

Widmann died on September 30, 1660 in San Martino al Cimino , today a district of Viterbo. His body was transferred to Rome and buried in his titular church.
