The Crni Guber spring

Crni Guber ("Black Guber") is one of several medicinal springs that arise in the vicinity of Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina , near the Serbian border.

location

A staircase near the source

The source is about 1.5 kilometers east of the town center of Srebrenica at 560  m. i. J. in the valley of the Crvena rijeka . Today only a narrow, paved path leads to it, which runs through a lush green forest. The street then leads into a large concrete area on which the ruins of the former spa hotel can still be seen. In the immediate vicinity, a few paths and stairs meander through the wooded hills of the low mountain range. The whole landscape is characterized by orange-red spots, which can be seen above all in the vicinity of flowing water. These already indicate the high iron content of the water.

history

The importance of the spring as an important medicinal water was recognized in the 19th century. Initially, the water was bottled by Mattoni and shipped worldwide, for example to England, Denmark, Sweden, Holland and the USA. In the 20th century, the establishment of a spa hotel near the source made it possible to take advantage of the popularity of the water. The number of visitors to the spa hotel rose steadily, including many foreign visitors. The Domavija Hotel, which was located in the city center, also benefited from the large number of visitors. During the Bosnian War , in which the city gained notoriety through the Srebrenica massacre , the Crni Guber spa hotel, which in 1980 still booked 25,577 overnight stays, as well as large parts of the rest of the city, was almost completely destroyed. After the war, the lack of financial resources and the expected absence of visitors led to the fact that the site, which became the property of a company as part of state privatization, and the surrounding springs have almost been forgotten.

Ingredients of the water

Since the spring was developed, there have been numerous international studies regarding the constituents of the water. Above all, a high content of iron (II) oxide and arsenic was found, which makes the source of the Crni Guber with the surrounding sources the only natural arsenic-containing sources in Europe. In detail, the water contains to 10,000 parts (according to Ernst Ludwig ):

Particle type number
Sodium chloride 0.017
potassium sulphate 0.166
Sodium sulphate 0.037
calcium sulphate 0.209
Sulphate of magnesium 0.219
iron (II) oxide sulfuric acid 3.734
sulphate of manganese 0.009
zinc sulphate 0.078
sulfuric aluminum 2.277
free sulfuric acid 0.093
phosphate of calcium 0.010
Arsenic anhydride 0.061
Silica anhydride 0.648
lithium traces
copper traces
organic substances 0.074

The last investigation was carried out in 2005. The composition, which is unique in Europe, comes from rainwater, which sinks through the many existing crevices and absorbs a wide variety of minerals from the mountains. The Crni Guber water is drinkable in its natural state and flows from the spring at 300 l / min at a constant 12.4 ° C. The daily consumption of the water should take place under medical supervision.

Effect of water

For centuries, water has been thought to have a healing effect, including against anemia , iron deficiency anemia , malaria , intermittent fever , various nerve and skin diseases , loss of appetite , weight loss , rheumatism , skin diseases and lymphomas .

More healing springs

In addition to the most famous spring Crni Guber, there are four other medicinal springs in the immediate vicinity that are worth mentioning:

  • Očna voda ("eye water") is a well-visited medicinal spring. It flows in only a small amount, but is very rich in minerals. Given as an eye drop, it is particularly used to treat conjunctivitis.
  • The source of Ljepotica ("Beauty") is said to be mainly visited by women. Washing with this water is said to cleanse the skin and improve the complexion. Conditioners and bath treatments are used for skin diseases.
  • Mali Guber ("Little Guber") contains twice as much iron as Crni Guber and also higher proportions of calcium and magnesium . The source is not that productive.
  • Sinusna voda (" Sinus Water") is used to treat sinus infections. It is administered through the nose. With constant use, it is possible to relieve the pain in the sinuses.

According to the company Guber ad Srebrenica (see below), these medicinal springs will also be marketed in various forms in the future.

Present & future

After the horrors of the Bosnian war and the massacre were gradually processed, interest in the use of the source and the surrounding land grew again. The current owner, the Bosnian-Serbian company Guber ad Srebrenica , plans to revive the Mattoni tradition and market the sources under a different product name. The spring water is to be bottled again and shipped all over the world as a remedy. The Crni Guber spa hotel is also to be rebuilt at the same location in order to welcome international guests to Srebrenica again. The Bosnian- Muslim mayor of the city is very interested in the success of the project, as it can initiate the economic recovery of the community, which is confronted with high unemployment. In addition, the project is also a symbol of the successful coexistence of the previously so strongly antagonistic ethnic groups in Srebrenica. Numerous national and international collaborations are necessary to realize the plans . Some of them, for example with the German Gustav Obermeyer from Plauen, who is to supply the technology for the project, have already been entered into, so that a quick implementation of the project can be expected.
