Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 4th Duke of Sutherland , KG (born July 20, 1851 in London , † June 27, 1913 in Dunrobin Castle ) was a British peer and therefore a member of the House of Lords .

background

Sutherland was the second born son of George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 3rd Duke of Sutherland and Anne Hay-Mackenzie, Countess of Cromartie (1829-1888). He went to Eton College .

Until the death of his older brother George in 1858, he used the courtesy address Lord Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, after which he held the courtesy title of Earl Gower from 1858 to 1861 and the courtesy title of Marquess of Stafford as Heir Apparent from 1858 to 1861 .

Military career

As Marquess of Stafford, Sutherland began his military service as an ensign in the 2nd Life Guards , and was retired as a lieutenant in 1875. He became captain of the Staffordshire Yeomanry in 1876 and was Lieutenant-Colonel there from 1891 to 1898. He was also Lieutenant-Colonel of the Sutherland Rifles, a volunteer regiment, from 1882 to 1891. From 1911 until his death he was Honorary Colonel of the Territorial Force Battalions of the Seaforth Highlanders .

He has also served as President of the Staffordshire Territorial Forces Association since the Territorial Force was established in 1908.

Political career

Sutherland's political activities focused on the House of Lords , which he belonged to on the benches of the Conservative Party after inheriting his father's titles. He was also Mayor of Longton near Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire from 1895 to 1896 and was Alderman there from 1898 .

Awards

He became a Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter in 1902 .

Sports

He was temporarily Master of Foxhounds with the North Staffordshire Hunt .

He married Millicent Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, Duchess of Sutherland , daughter of Robert St Clair-Erskine, 4th Earl of Rosslyn , on October 20, 1884, and had four children with her:

In 1900, the Duke of Sutherland owned around 550,000  hectares (1,358,000  acres ) of land and the steam-powered yacht Catania , which he also chartered to super-rich contemporaries.

The Duke died on June 27, 1913, at the age of 61 at Dunrobin Castle , Sutherlandshire and was buried in Dunrobin.
