action

The action takes place at the time of the Qing Dynasty , in 1797.

After eighteen years of solitude, the famous swordsman Yu Xiu Lian (also Yu Shu Lien) travels to Beijing, where she wants to attend the funeral service in honor of the late Mr. Te, the emperor's brother, who was like a father to her. In his house is the legendary green jade sword of the underworld, the sword of her late love Li Mu Bai. On the way to Beijing, Yu Xiu Lian's carriage is attacked by several warriors from the Western Lotus, a clan led by warlord Hades Dai. While Yu Xiu Lian is fighting the attackers, a masked rider comes to her aid. Together they manage to defeat the attackers. One of the attackers, a young man named Wei Fang, escapes and runs into a blind sorceress in the surrounding forest, who orders him to take her to Hades Dai.

A young woman named Snow Vase appears at the tower of the warlord Hades Dai. She asks him to join his ranks. As Dai approaches, she draws a sword and tries to kill him. However, he manages to fend off her effortlessly, whereupon she flees.

When Wei Fang and the blind sorceress arrive at Hades Dai, she reports that his great sword is surpassed by the green sword. She prophesies that if he wants to rule the world of war, he must be given the green sword. Dai hesitates to storm the emperor's brother's house, but the sorceress tells him to send Wei Fang, as the boy and the sword are fateful.

Yu Xiu Lian arrives in Beijing and is taken to Sir Te's house. Te's son greets them and reveals that the green sword is on display in the house. He also remembers the unmentioned love between Li Mu Bai and Yu Xiu Lian. That night, when Wei Fang breaks into the house and tries to steal the sword, Snow Vase appears and fights him. During the fight, Schneevase sees a birthmark on Wei Fang's chest, which distracts her. This enables him to escape. However, Yu Xiu Lian manages to arrest the boy. It is discovered that Wei Fang belongs to the Western Lotus and fears that this clan will attack with an army in order to steal the sword. Schneevase then asks Yu Xiu Lian to train her and guide her on the Iron Way, a kind of code of honor for the resistance. Yu Xiu Lian initially refuses, but then starts training. In addition, Yu Xiu Lian writes a call for the wandering warriors of the Iron Way to come to the house of Te for support in order to be able to fend off a feared attack by Hades Dai.

Meng Sizhao - known in the West as the Silent Wolf, the rider who came to help Yu Xiu Lian - hangs this appeal in a tavern. A warrior offers his twenty swordsmen at a high price and attacks Stiller Wolf when he rejects him. Four warriors join Silent Wolf in battle. You imagine him as the Flying Sword of Shantung; Thunder Fist Chan, famous in Zhejiang; Shi silver dagger, famous in Fuzhou; and Turtle Ma, famous in this restaurant. These four move to Te's house with Silent Wolf. Yu Xiu Lian is currently training Snow Vase there. Yu Xiu Lian is shocked to see Silent Wolf, her former fiancé, who, to her knowledge, was killed by Hades Dai many years ago. Silent Wolf explains that he was in love with Yu Xiu Lian, but knew that Li Mu Bai was their true love. So he pretended that he died seeking a life of enlightenment in the mountains.

Hades Dai is furious that Wei Fang, who is still being held in the Te house, has apparently failed in his raid, and sends the blind sorceress to steal the sword. She succeeds in killing the silver dagger Shi and the turtle Ma. Snow Vase tries to free Wei Fang from his cage in the courtyard, but she is attacked by the blind sorceress, and Wei Fang tells her where the sword is. The blind sorceress fights Yu Xiu Lian in the sword chamber and kills Sir Te's son when Yu Xiu Lian refuses to surrender the sword.

While the residents of the House of Te mourn the loss of their companions, Schneevase explains their connection to Wei Fang's past. His birth mother was the legendary swordsman Han Mei. As a baby, however, he was exchanged for Schneevase by Schneevase's mother, a concubine. Han Mei raised Snow Vases like her own daughter, but never stopped looking for her son. When she found him at the Western Lotus, she was fatally wounded by Hades Dai and dying pleaded with Snow Vase to find Wei Fang.

Knowing that Dai will send people to kill Wei Fang, Snow Vase frees him and is horrified to learn that he has stolen the sword. Silent Wolf tracks down the boy, however, and they fight on a frozen lake. Wei Fang's master, Iron Crow, arrives and wounds Silent Wolf, allowing Wei Fang to escape and reach the Western Lotus. Wei Fang offers Hades Dai the sword, but tries to kill him with it in order to avenge his mother. Yu Xiu Lian and the others arrive and fight Dai's army. Yu Xiu Lian fights the sorceress and kills her. Mantis, an elite fighter of the Western Lotus, kills the Flying Sword and Thunderfist Chan and then fights against Snow Vase, who defeats her. However, Snow Vase is also badly wounded. Silent Wolf fights against Hades Dai on the tower and finally kills the warlord with his own sword when he reaches for the green sword.

Snow vase survives her injuries and accompanies Yu Xiu Lian, Silent Wolf and Wei Fang as they take the green sword to the Wudang Mountains , where it will be safely stored again.
