Ctibor Turba (born October 16, 1944 in Marienbad ) is a Czech actor , pantomime , playwright , director and educator. Turba combines the behavior of a circus clown with absurd theater and Dadaist humor. Together with his partner Boris Hybner , Ctibor Turba is one of the most important representatives of modern Czech pantomime.

Life

Turba studied 1958–1962 in Brno, where he grew up, at an arts and crafts school. He worked in film studios, especially with the directors Hermína Týrlová and Karel Zeman , who were already well-known at the time , where he got to know working with animation and puppets in cartoons and, among other things, as an animator and artist on Zeman's film Baron Prášil ( Baron Münchhausen ) (1961 / 62) was involved.

In 1966 Turba and Boris Hybner, whom he met in 1965, founded the Pantomima Alfreda Jarryho (PAJ) ensemble in Prague , with whom they won first prize at the 1st Mime Festival in Litvínov and a year later in Montreal at the world exhibition Expo 67 performed successfully for several months in a Prague magic lantern program .

From around 1968, while the PAJ ensemble made appearances abroad (until it was banned by the cultural authorities in 1972), Turba partly worked independently and gained experience in other areas: he appeared in the Humberto Circus (1968-1969), played in Denmark 1972–1973 in a street theater company, and in 1974 he appeared in the Alfred Circus with his own Klaunerie program (Project Cirkus Alfred); at the same time he taught in various circus schools in Czechoslovakia and abroad.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Turba began working with several drama and puppet theaters in the field of movement production and worked for television, including as a consultant and choreographer. In 1989 he founded the Studio Kaple pantomime school in Nečtiny . In 1995 he directed Janáček's Příhody lišky bystroušky ( The Cunning Little Vixen ) at the National Theater in Prague . In 1997 Ctibor Turba founded the experimental pantomime theater Alfred ve dvoře (Alfred in the courtyard), which specializes in the representation of body movements . In the first two years there were around eleven performances here, which also made numerous guest appearances abroad; the theater is particularly known for the fact that there is no permanent cast, but rather foreign actors and ensembles appear on the stage. In 2001 Turba handed over the management of the ensemble to the Motus civic association.

Turba taught at the Music and Dance Faculty (HAMU) of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, then at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU) in Brno.
