Cullen Andrews Battle
Cullen Andrews Battle (born June 1, 1829 in Powelton , Hancock County , Georgia , † April 8, 1905 in Greensboro , North Carolina ) was an American brigadier general in the Confederate Army in the American Civil War .
Life
Battle was the second son of Cullen Battle and Jane A. Battle, b. Lamon, born in Powelton. In 1836 the family moved to Irvinton (now Eufaula ), Alabama . In 1851 he married Georgia P. Williams while he was still a law student and in 1852 he was admitted to the bar. In the following years he moved to Greensboro, worked as a lawyer and was active in local politics.
Before the outbreak of war, he formed the Tuskeegee Light Infantry and equipped them with appropriate uniforms at his own expense. A few days later, he and his men in the 2nd Infantry - Regiment integrated by Alabama and Battle received the rank of Lieutenant Colonel . On January 8, 1861 were to Pensacola reassigned to the troops from Florida to support and safeguard Florida's coasts. A few months later he was transferred to the 3rd Alabama Infantry Regiment. His greatest fights were at the Battle of Seven Pines on May 31 and June 1, 1862, the Battle of Fredericksburg from December 11-15, 1862, and the Battle of Gettysburg from July 1-3, 1863. After that, Battle was promoted to Brigadier General and commanded his own brigade at the Battle of the Wilderness in early May 1864, at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House from May 8-21, 1864, and at the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864, where he was badly wounded.
After the end of the civil war, Battle went back to Greensboro and continued to work as a lawyer and politician. In 1868 he was elected to Congress , but could not take up his mandate because he was not ready to take the oath of loyalty to the Union. He later became mayor of New Bern . The Battle couple had four children.
