description

Cupressus duclouxiana grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 25 meters and diameters of up to 80 centimeters at breast height . Young trees have a conical crown that becomes rounded to broad with age. This consists of slim, dense branches that come straight off the trunk. The thin, 0.8 to 1 millimeter thick branches are ascending or descending but never hanging.

The scale-like and curved leaves are 1 to 2 millimeters long and are blue-green on the underside. They are toothed. The leaf tips are pointed or blunt.

The male cones are almost spherical to egg-shaped with a diameter of 4 to 7 millimeters. They contain twelve to 20 microsporophylls . The cones have a spherical shape with a diameter of around 1.5 to 3.2 centimeters. At first they are colored blue-green. As they ripen, they turn dark brown to purple-brown. They consist of six to ten cone scales, each of which carries several seeds. The brown to purple-brown seeds are 3 to 5 millimeters long. Each seed has three ridges. The seedlings have two seed leaves ( cotyledons ).

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Cupressus duclouxiana is in China. They can be found there in the mountains of southwest Sichuan , southeast Xizang and in central and northwest Yunnan . Presumably there are also deposits in Guizhou .

Cupressus duclouxiana thrives at altitudes of 1400 to 3300 meters. It grows there mainly in dry and moist coniferous forests and on mountain slopes.

use

The wood from Cupressus duclouxiana is a highly valued construction timber in their homeland. It is also used as firewood. Especially in Europe, Cupressus duclouxiana is grown as an ornamental plant.

Systematics

It was first described as Cupressus duclouxiana in 1914 by Paul Robert Hickel in Encycl. Econ. Sylvicult. 91, pl. 3, pp. 419-424 .

The species is occasionally divided into two subspecies:

  • Cupressus duclouxiana subsp. austrotibetica (Silba) Silba . A synonym is Cupressus austrotibetica Silba .
  • Cupressus duclouxiana subsp. duclouxiana is the nominate form.

Hazard and protection

Cupressus duclouxiana is listed as "critically endangered" on the IUCN Red List . The felling of forests to gain arable land and settlement areas is cited as the main risk. In addition, the stocks of the species are scattered.
