Curacautín is a city in the South American Andean state of Chile and is located in the Araucania region , approx. 600 km south of Santiago de Chile . The regional capital Temuco is about 90 km southwest of the town. Curacautín means "hot stone" in the Mapuche language , which indicates the volcanically active environment. Curacautín is in a red danger zone. The most recent red alert was issued on April 4, 2009 for the place because of a more powerful eruption of the Llaima volcano .

The area around the city is appreciated by tourists for its scenic beauty. Curacautín is known as a starting point for visits to the national parks Conguillío and Tolhuaca and the National Protected Areas Reserva Nacional Malalcahuello and Reserva Nacional Nalcas . That is why tourism is one of the residents' main sources of income alongside agriculture.
history
Curacautín was founded on March 12, 1882 by Gregorio Urrutia Venegas. Between 1913 and 1915 the railroad reached the city, which resulted in an economic boom in the region. Among other things, the abundance of wood in the area was exploited by a plywood factory.

Curacautín is located on the international route Ruta 181 , which connects the town with Argentina through the former Las Raíces railway tunnel . There are direct bus connections to Puerto Montt , Osorno , Valdivia , Temuco , Concepcion , Los Ángeles , Chillán and Santiago . There is also an international connection from Buenos Aires via Curacautín to Temuco and back.
