Curtis Stone (athlete)

Curtis Stone ( Curtis Charles "Curt" Stone; born November 19, 1922 in Brooklyn ) is a retired American middle-distance , long-distance and obstacle runner .

At the Olympic Games in London in 1948 he was sixth over 5000 m .

In 1951 he won the Pan American Games in Buenos Aires over 10,000 m and over 3000 m obstacle and was fourth over 1500 m . There was controversy over his victory in the obstacle race because Stone let his compatriot Browning Ross catch up on the home straight and crossed the finish line with him. The referees initially wanted to disqualify Stone, but gave in when the US delegation assured them that it was a sporting gesture common in their country. After the camera evaluation showed that Stone was a hair's breadth ahead of his comrade, he was declared the winner.

The following year he came at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , he came over 10,000 m on the 20th place and was eliminated over 5000 m in the run. In 1956 he did not get beyond the first round at the Olympic Games in Melbourne over 5000 m.

He was three times US champion over 5000 m (1947, 1948, 1952), four times over 10,000 m or six miles (1951-1954) and once each over 3000 m obstacle (1949) and in cross country (1947). In the hall he won the national title over three miles four times (1947, 1948, 1950, 1951).
