The Cuyahoga Valley National Park is located in the northeastern United States . It is the first national park in Ohio and is near Akron and Cleveland . The Cuyahoga River meanders through the park , which in the Iroquois languages ​​means Crooked River (German roughly "winding river").

In 1974, the 132 km² area was declared a National Recreation Area . On October 11, 2000, the national park was created. Popular with visitors are hiking and biking on the 30 km-long Towpath Trail , which was formerly part of the 496 km long Ohio-Erie Canal .
